As David was unable to travel from the US for the ceremony, Lynne Ann Morse accepted the award on his behalf. She received the award, his cash prize of $150 and his story will be published in the December issue of Interzone.

The Five stories shortlisted for the final round of judging were:
- Extemophenia by Janet Barron
- Fear of the alien by Lannah Battley
- The Last Whippoorwill by Ciaran Cloniffe
- Nucleon by David D Levine
- Rainmaker on the run by Jetse de Vries
The Award ceremony took place in Queens University Belfast. Peggy White was present and had the following to say about the story: 'I have read the winning story and I know that James would have loved it'.
David was able to address the room thanks to a video message, sent via the Internet, and there was also a phone connection with David.
Next year's award has now launched and the ceremony is planned to take place at Novacon, the Birmingham SF group's annual convention.
